Cancelling, pausing and resuming subscriptions

Cancel a subscription now or at period end, pause billing until a set date, resume it, extend a trial, and import existing Stripe subscriptions.

In this article

Every recurring price and every installment plan your buyers choose becomes a subscription. You can cancel, pause, resume or adjust each one here without opening Stripe or PayPal. Members can cancel and pause on their own billing page.

Open the payments overview

From there, go to Payments > Sales > Subscriptions. If Payments is off in your workspace, switch it on under Settings > Features. Seeing subscriptions needs View Payments. Every change below needs Update Orders / Customers.

The subscription list

Above the list, Recurring revenue shows your monthly recurring revenue, the number of active subscriptions and the trend compared to 30 days ago. It counts active and trialing live subscriptions in your main currency. A subscription with a scheduled cancellation still counts until it actually ends.

Each row shows the Subscriber, the Plan, the Price, the Status and the Created date. The status is one of Active, Trialing, Past due, Paused, Cancelled, Expired, Pending or Incomplete. A paused subscription also shows its resume date, and Access paused when the member cannot use the content during the pause. Test subscriptions are hidden. Open the three-dot menu and choose Show test subscriptions to see them.

Open a subscription with Edit in its row. The Overview shows the subscriber, the price, the next renewal and the available actions. The other tabs show the billing schedule, the Payments charged so far, the Coupons applied (this tab appears once a coupon is used), the Activity log and your Notes.

Cancelling a subscription

Choose Cancel subscription. Under When should access end? you pick one of two options:

  • At period end is the default. The member keeps the subscription until the current billing period ends; with Stripe and PayPal, no further payment is taken. Until then the overview shows Cancels at period end on :date with the end date filled in.
  • Immediately ends the subscription right now. No further payments are taken, and the access from the subscription is removed right away. One-time products bought in the same order stay. Nothing is refunded for the unused part of the period. To return money, refund the payment on the order, see Refunds and credit notes.

The Reason (optional) is stored for your team. With PayPal, it is also passed on to PayPal as the cancellation reason. A cancellation cannot be undone once the subscription has ended.

The cancellation is sent to Stripe or PayPal right away, so billing stops at once. With At period end, the member keeps access until the paid period is over, and it is removed then. One-time products bought in the same order stay.

Pausing a subscription

Choose Pause and set Resume on, which suggests a date one month ahead. Billing stops until that date. With Stripe, any invoice that falls into the pause is skipped and the subscription continues on its own afterwards. With PayPal, the subscription is suspended and reactivated within the hour after the resume date.

By default the member keeps access during the pause. You can change that for one product under its prices, or for all products under Payments > Settings > Subscriptions. The pause dialog tells you which rule applies.

Note

Cancelled, expired and already paused subscriptions show no Pause button. Neither do Stripe subscriptions with a scheduled cancellation.

Resuming a subscription

Resume appears on a paused subscription and on one that is set to cancel at period end. Billing continues on the normal schedule, a scheduled cancellation is withdrawn, and access that was paused is restored.

A scheduled PayPal cancellation cannot be withdrawn, because PayPal has already cancelled the subscription. The buyer has to subscribe again.

Extending a trial

Extend trial appears while a Stripe subscription or an invited trial is in its trial. Enter how many days to add under Add how many days?, between 1 and 3650. The days are added to the current trial end, and the first charge moves back accordingly. PayPal cannot extend a running trial. An invited trial without a payment provider ends when its trial ends, and its access is removed. See Trials and installment plans.

Changing the plan or applying a coupon

Change plan switches the subscription to another recurring price of the same product, including prices with another billing interval. With Prorate now, Stripe invoices or credits the difference for the rest of the period right away; with No proration, it does not. Installment plans cannot change plan.

Apply coupon takes a Coupon code. The discount starts with the next invoice and runs as long as the coupon's duration.

Both actions work for Stripe subscriptions only. On a PayPal subscription, Change plan says that the plan cannot be switched, and Apply coupon is refused when you save, because it keeps the price of its PayPal plan.

The activity log

Activity records each cancellation, pause and resume, the end of a pause, every time access was paused or restored, trial extensions, the end of a trial, plan changes, applied coupons and accepted win-back offers. Each entry shows the date and who made the change: the member, a named team member, or the system. The log keeps the 50 most recent entries.

Changes made directly in Stripe, such as a pause or a scheduled cancellation, are synced back automatically.

From the member profile

The member profile has the same subscriptions under the Payments tab. There you can pause for a number of months, resume or cancel. A cancellation from the member profile always takes effect at period end.

Importing existing Stripe subscriptions

If buyers already pay you through Stripe subscriptions, choose Import from Stripe in the toolbar menu. Pick the Stripe mode, then List Stripe subscriptions to see up to 100 of them. Each one is marked Importable, Already imported, No email, No local price or No local product. Importable ones are preselected.

An import only works when the Stripe price is linked to one of your prices, see Variants and prices. Nothing changes in Stripe. Buyers of active or trialing subscriptions get access right away. Incomplete subscriptions are imported as pending and past due ones as Past due, both without access. Running the import again skips subscriptions that are already there.
