Upsells and order bumps

Offer an add-on with a checkbox before the buyer pays, or a one-click offer right after the purchase, and see how both land in your orders.

In this article

Order bumps and upsells sell a second product to someone who is already buying. An order bump is a checkbox on the payment step, so the add-on is paid together with the main product. An upsell comes right after the purchase as a one-click offer. You set both per product, on the Upsell tab of the product.

Open your products

If Payments is off in your workspace, switch it on under Settings > Features. Saving the Upsell tab needs Manage Catalog (Products, Prices, Coupons).

Setting up an order bump

Open the product people buy, go to Upsell and switch on Show order bump in checkout in the Order bump box. Then pick the Product and the Price to offer. Title (optional) takes up to 120 characters; left empty, it reads "Yes, add" followed by the product name and "to my order". Text (optional) takes up to 300 characters for a sentence on why the add-on fits. The Buyer sees box previews the result.

Not every product can be offered. It has to be another published product that is neither a gift card nor shipped, with an active one-time price above zero. Variant prices and event ticket prices are left out. If nothing qualifies, the box tells you so.

When buyers see the order bump

The offer appears unchecked under Add to your order, with its price, and the buyer ticks it themselves. It only shows when all of this is true:

  • Order bump is switched on in your checkout design under Payments > Settings > Checkout. It is on by default. If it is off, the product shows a yellow note with a link there.
  • The buyer is on the checkout page of this one product, not in the cart.
  • The add-on price has the same currency as the price the buyer chose.
  • The chosen price is not a recurring price or payment plan with a trial.
  • The add-on is in stock.
  • The payment method the buyer picked is allowed for the add-on product. If they switch to one that is not, the bump disappears.

With a recurring price or a payment plan, the add-on is marked as a one-time payment and charged once, with the first payment. In that case it is not offered when the buyer pays with PayPal.

If the add-on product or its price is deactivated later, the bump box shows Buyers do not see this offer right now. Pick another one or activate it again.

How an order bump appears in the order

The add-on is a second line in the same order, with its own product, so the buyer gets the access of that product too. A coupon reduces only the main product, not the add-on. If the main subscription ends later, the access from the add-on stays, because it was a one-time purchase.

Setting up an upsell

In the Upsell offer box on the same tab, choose the Upsell product. None (skip upsell) turns the step off. Only published products can be picked, and a product cannot upsell itself. An upsell whose own upsell chain leads back to this product is refused with "This upsell already leads back to this product."

Headline (optional), Subheadline (optional) and Button label (optional) take up to 150, 200 and 80 characters. Left empty, the buyer sees "Add this to your order in one click" and the button Yes, add this to my order.

What the buyer sees after paying

After a successful payment, the upsell comes before the thank-you page. The buyer can accept it or continue without it. The offer uses the primary active price of the upsell product if it is above zero, otherwise its lowest active price above zero. Without an active paid price, the step is skipped. If an order holds several products, the upsell of the first one is used. An order that came from an upsell does not lead to a further upsell.

The step only appears when your workspace can take payment for the product: through Stripe, PayPal or an offline payment method.

One click, or a regular checkout

For a one-time price, accepting charges the card from the first purchase right away. That works when the buyer paid by card through Stripe, only once per order and only in the browser session of the first purchase. The buyer is sent to the normal checkout page of the upsell product instead when:

  • the offer is opened in another browser,
  • Stripe is not connected,
  • the buyer has no saved Stripe customer,
  • the bank asks the buyer to confirm the payment,
  • the tax cannot be calculated,
  • the charge fails.

If the offer was already accepted, the buyer sees "This offer has already been added to your purchase." instead.

A recurring price or payment plan opens a Stripe checkout page, because a new subscription needs the buyer's confirmation. Without Stripe or without a saved Stripe customer it falls back to the product's normal checkout page as well.

Note

A one-click upsell is a separate order whose number starts with UPS-. When the buyer is sent to the normal checkout page instead, that purchase gets an ordinary order number. A UPS- order that was started but not paid expires on its own.

Bundles are something else

A bundle is a product of its own that contains other products, and buying it grants the access of each product inside. It is not an add-on to another purchase. You manage bundles under Payments > Catalog > Bundles, see Bundles.
