Creating a product

Create a product in five short steps, take it live and share its checkout link, then add images, a description and stock.

In this article

A product is what a buyer pays for: a course, a download, a coaching package, a physical item or a gift card. Every product gets its own checkout link, so you can sell it as soon as it is live and a payment method is connected, without building a page first.

Open your products

If Payments is off in your workspace, switch it on under Settings > Features first. Seeing the catalog takes the permission View Payments. Creating and changing products takes Manage Catalog (Products, Prices, Coupons).

How do I create a product?

Open Payments > Catalog > Products and click Add. A short wizard walks you through five steps: Type, Details, Pricing, Access and Go live.

Type: Pick what you are selling: Digital, Physical, Service or Gift card. The type decides which settings follow. Physical products get stock and shipping settings. For a gift card, the amount paid becomes a spendable balance that is redeemed at checkout, see Gift cards. You can change the type later.

Details: Enter a Name and check the Product URL. Both are required to continue. The URL is filled in from the name and has to be unique in your workspace. Internal Name is optional. You can also pick an image from your media library here.

Pricing: Choose a Pricing model: One-time payment, Recurring, Payment plan or Free / Pay what you want, then enter the amount and pick its currency. The currency starts on EUR and can differ per price. Gift cards offer only a one-time price or pay what you want. One price is enough to start selling. More prices and variants come later, see Variants and prices.

Click Create to save the product. It now exists as a draft.

Access: Choose what a buyer unlocks, such as courses, hubs or groups. This step is optional and skipped for gift cards. See What a purchase unlocks.

Go live: Click Go live to publish the product. The wizard then shows the checkout link, ready to share. Run a test purchase opens that checkout in test mode, see Test mode and live mode.

Draft or live?

A draft cannot be bought. Its checkout link does not open a checkout and its product page is not reachable. Only a live product sells.

To change the state later, open the product and use the switch at the bottom of the editor sidebar. It reads Live or Draft, and Save applies it. The sidebar, and with it the switch, is not shown on a phone screen.

Important

If you set a live product with active subscriptions back to draft, you are asked first under Archive product?. New purchases stop, but existing subscribers stay subscribed and keep billing. Choose Keep live or Archive anyway.

Who can see a live product?

Visibility in the Product section of the editor decides where a live product shows up:

  • Public: the product page is reachable, and the product appears in product showcases on hubs and dashboards.
  • Unlisted: the product page is reachable by its URL, but showcases list it only when you pick it by hand.
  • Hidden: there is no product page and no showcase entry. The checkout link still works, so you can sell to people you send it to.

Can buyers order more than one?

By default a buyer orders one unit per checkout. To change that, switch on Quantity selectable in the Quantity picker box of the Product section. Minimum quantity sets the smallest number a buyer can order, and Maximum quantity the largest. Leave the maximum empty to allow up to 99. With limited stock, the buyer cannot order more than is left. Gift cards are always ordered one at a time.

Images and description

Open the product and go to Images. Add images picks one or more images from your media library. The first image becomes the primary image, which is shown in listings and as the main image. Use Set primary on another image to swap it, and Crop to cut an image to size. If you delete the primary image, the next one takes its place.

Under Details, the Description holds the long text shown on the product page.

The checkout link opens the checkout for this one product directly. It ends in /checkout/p/ followed by the product's ID. The primary price is preselected, and the buyer can switch when the product has more than one.

You find it under Checkout & URLs in the editor. The Storefront box holds the Product page URL, the Checkout links box the Checkout link and a Test mode link. The test mode link opens the real checkout in test mode. It works while you are signed in with View Payments and a Stripe test account or a PayPal sandbox is connected.

The Checkout link button above the product list opens the Checkout links page. There you build a link with one or more products or bundles, a fixed price, a coupon, prefilled buyer details and more, and copy it or its QR code.

Note

A live product without an active price shows "Checkout not available yet" instead of a checkout.

The other sections of the editor

  • Categories sorts the product into your categories, see Product categories.
  • Affiliate sets the commission your partners earn on this product.
  • Upsell offers a second product right after the purchase, see Upsells and order bumps.
  • Thank-you page sets the title and text after the purchase, or a Custom redirect to your own page.
  • Billing holds the cancellation rules and the Subscription group of a recurring product.

Stock for physical products

Physical products have a Stock & shipping section. Switch on Track stock and enter Units in stock. Sales take units off, refunds put them back, and units are held for 15 minutes while a buyer is paying. Checkout stops at zero. Switch on Keep selling when sold out to accept orders at zero stock and ship once new units arrive. Stock history lists sales, refunds and every manual change, newest first. With variants, each variant keeps its own stock.

Can members pause a subscription?

As soon as the product has a recurring price, the end of its Prices section shows a Pause box. It decides whether members can pause this subscription on their billing page. Members can pause offers Use workspace setting, Allow and Do not allow. Maximum pause length limits how long a pause lasts, and Access during a pause offers Use workspace setting, Keep access and Suspend access.

Only Stripe subscriptions billed monthly or more often can be paused. Yearly prices, payment plans and PayPal subscriptions keep running.
