Do this once with a real order before you send customers to your shop. It takes five minutes and it is the only way to be sure the chain holds end to end.
Place one test order
Buy the mapped product in your own shop, with an email address that does not already exist in your memberarea.
Use a real payment if you can. A Shopify test payment also works, but the order is then marked as a test order here, and the Orders list hides test orders until you switch them on. Orders from a Shopify development store always count as test orders, however they were paid. Either way the order has to end up paid. An unpaid or pending order unlocks nothing on purpose.
Follow it through
- The delivery arrived. Open your Shopify page at
/admin/settings/integrations/shopify, then the Webhook log tab. Your order appears within seconds, topicorders/paid, result Processed. - The order exists here. Open Payments, then Sales, then Orders. If you paid with a test payment, switch test orders on first, otherwise the row is hidden. The order is listed with the buyer, the amount in the shop's currency, and Shopify as the payment method. It is a real order, not a note: it counts in your revenue and it can pay an affiliate commission.
- The member exists. Open Audience, then Members. The buyer is there. If they had no account, memberarea created one and emailed them a link to set a password. A buyer who becomes a member does not also turn up as a contact.
- The access is live. Open the member and check the course, group or forum you mapped. Or sign in as the buyer and look at the member area they see.
The buyer gets your welcome email, not an invoice from us. Shopify is the seller of record for that order and sends the receipt. We deliberately do not send a second one.
The order is stored in the currency your shop charged in, with no conversion. One shop bills in one currency.
Then refund it
Refund the test order in Shopify. Within seconds the access is gone again, and
the Webhook log shows the refunds/create delivery as processed. Refunding
a single line of a multi-line order removes only what that line paid for.
When something is missing
| Symptom | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Nothing happened at all | Webhook log. No entry means Shopify never reached us, check the connection card for Disconnected. |
| Entry says Ignored | See The four results for what that means. |
| Entry says Failed | The note carries the reason. Fix it, then press Process again on that row. |
| Order is there, access is not | Open the mapping. Either it has No access target, or it is paused, or the order arrived before the mapping existed. |
| The order came in before you mapped the product | Mapping it now only affects later orders. Grant that one buyer their access by hand. The delivery counts as processed and cannot be run again. |
| Order is there, no member at all | The order carried no email address and no Shopify customer, so there was nobody to create. |
| Member is there twice | Two different email addresses. The order's customer record is matched by Shopify customer id, falling back to the email address when there is none. The member behind it is looked up by email only when the customer record is new, so two customer records with two addresses become two members. A returning buyer whose Shopify customer id is unchanged stays on the member already linked to that record. |
