A ManyChat subscriber and a person in your memberarea are two records. These steps bring them together: they save the person, remember which subscriber belongs to whom, and keep tags and fields up to date in both directions.
How a subscriber gets linked
The first step that finds or creates a person stores a link between the subscriber and that member or contact. The link belongs to the ManyChat page, so the same subscriber on two pages has two links. Every later step and every event uses the link, which is why a flow should save the person early.
The most reliable first step is Save contact in MemberArea. It needs no account and works with a phone number alone.
Save contact in MemberArea
Save contact in MemberArea creates a contact or updates the one that already exists.
- The step takes the email address, phone number and name from the subscriber's profile in ManyChat. It needs at least an email address or a phone number there.
- It looks for an existing contact by email address first, then by phone number. An empty name never overwrites a name you already have.
- Tags takes comma separated names. Names that do not exist yet are created.
Created tells whether the contact is new, and Is member whether the person also has a member account.
If double opt-in is switched on for your contacts, a new contact with an email
address gets the confirmation email first. Until the person confirms, its
Status is pending_confirmation. The step does not record email consent, so
it never skips that confirmation.
Find person in MemberArea
Find person in MemberArea looks the subscriber up without changing anything.
Found answers member, contact or none, so a condition step can send
members, contacts and strangers down different paths. Once the subscriber was
linked before, the step finds the person even without an email address or phone
number in ManyChat.
Create member
Create member creates a member account. It needs an email address on the subscriber in ManyChat. An existing member with that address is reused instead of duplicated, and Created then says no.
When the account is new, the step hands back a login link in Login url. It signs the person in without a password, is valid for 24 hours and works once. Login url expires at formatted says until when, in the language and time zone of your memberarea. Someone who already had an account gets no link and logs in as usual.
The member profile has no phone field. To keep a phone number, run Save contact in MemberArea as well.
When your plan allows no more members, the step answers "This MemberArea has reached the number of members its plan allows, so no new account was created."
Tags
Add tag and Remove tag work on members and contacts alike. Pick the tag under Tag, or type a name under Or a tag name. Adding a name that does not exist yet creates the tag.
- Changed says whether anything happened. Adding a tag twice or removing a tag that was not set changes nothing.
- Applied to says whether the tag landed on a member or a contact.
On a member, a tag set from a flow counts like any other tag. It starts your email sequences, the automations that start with a tag being added or removed, and your webhooks. On a contact, adding a tag starts your email sequences only. The person has to exist first: otherwise the step answers "This contact does not exist in your MemberArea yet, so no tag could be changed."
Member fields
Set member field writes Value into the field you pick under Member field. It works for members only, so create the member first.
- A single choice field only takes one of its options.
- Fields for files, images, audio, video or multiple choices cannot be filled from a chat and are not offered.
- Writing the same value again changes nothing. A new value starts the automations and webhooks that listen for a changed field.
Send member summary
Send member summary answers with a finished message instead of single values, in the language of your memberarea. It greets the person, says whether the membership is active, lists course progress, the subscription and the last order.
- Button caption names the login button. It shows only for an account this chat created, the same rule as the login link of Create member.
- Quick reply 1 and Quick reply 2 add buttons that open another flow. Each one needs its target flow to show up.
If the subscriber has no account yet, the message says "We could not find an account for you in this MemberArea yet." and the quick replies still appear.
