Billing: invoices and payment method

Add the card memberarea charges, keep your billing address and VAT ID current, download invoices and see what happens when a payment fails.

In this article

memberarea charges your plan through Stripe. Your card, the address on your invoices and the invoices themselves are all on the Billing page. This is about what you pay memberarea. Payments your own customers make to you live under Payments.

Open Billing

Adding your card

Next to your current plan, click Add payment method. The Payment method dialog loads a secure Stripe form. Enter the card and click Save card. If your bank asks for an extra confirmation, it appears in the same step.

Shortly after you save it, the line under your plan reads Payment followed by the card brand and the last four digits, for example "Visa ending in 4242". memberarea never stores the full card number. Stripe keeps it.

To change the card, open the same dialog and save a new one. The new card becomes the default for all future invoices right away. Only the account owner can add or change the payment method.

When you order a plan and no card is on file yet, the dialog opens on its own, so you can finish the payment without leaving the page.

Billing address and VAT ID

The Billing address box sits next to your invoices. The address is shown on your invoices and decides which tax applies, so keep it current before your next invoice.

Company or name, Street & number, Postal code, City and Country are required. Address line 2 (optional), VAT ID (optional) and Billing email (optional) can stay empty. Click Save in the box to store your changes. Only the account owner can save the billing address.

Tip

A valid business VAT ID enables reverse charge for EU cross-border invoices. Enter it with the country prefix, for example DE123456789, and pick the matching country.

How VAT shows up

Prices on the plan cards exclude VAT. When you order, Review your order shows the Total price with the VAT rate for your country included, and notes that the final rate follows your billing address and is shown on the invoice. Where no rate is shown, any tax due in your country is added on the invoice.

Downloading invoices

The Invoices list shows your latest invoices with Invoice, Date, Amount, Status and PDF. The status is Paid once the charge went through and open while it is still outstanding. PDF opens the invoice from Stripe in a new tab, ready to save or forward to your accountant.

An invoice appears in the list as soon as Stripe reports that it was paid or that the payment failed. Until your first invoice exists, the list reads No invoices yet.

When a payment fails

If Stripe cannot collect a payment, your plan shows the status Past due, and a red notice reads Your last payment failed. The account owner also receives an email with the amount due and a link to Billing. It arrives once when the payment first fails, not again for every retry.

Your plan stays as it is while the payment is open, and Stripe retries the charge over the next few days. As soon as an invoice for your subscription is paid, the status returns to Active. If you save a new card while a payment is open, the open invoice is charged again on the new card right away.

Warning

If the payment cannot be collected in the end and the subscription ends, admin access is paused until you reactivate a plan, the same as after a cancellation.

Workspaces billed elsewhere

Two kinds of workspaces have no card on this page:

  • This workspace is billed by Shopify. Your plan, your payment method and your invoices live in your Shopify admin. Open Shopify billing takes you there. The account owner can move billing to memberarea with Bill me by MemberArea instead. Nothing in your workspace changes, but cancel the app subscription in Shopify yourself.
  • Your plan is managed by the platform. There is nothing to pay here, and invoices for this plan are issued by the platform directly.
