Promotion codes

Redeem a discount code for your memberarea plan, see what it changes in your order and why a code can be rejected.

In this article

A promotion code lowers what you pay memberarea for your plan, for example a code from a memberarea partner. This article is not about discount codes you create for your own products.

Open Billing

Entering a code

Open Settings > Billing and click the button on the plan card you want. This opens Review your order. Only the account owner can order, so only the owner sees the code field.

  1. Click I have a discount code next to Discount code.
  2. Type the code into the field.
  3. Click Redeem or press Enter.

memberarea checks the code against the plan you picked. If it fits, the field is replaced by the discount. If not, the reason appears right below the field. You can try up to 10 codes per minute.

The code belongs to this one order: close the dialog or pick another plan, and you enter it again. Remove next to the code lets you redeem a different one. Free plans have no code field.

What the code changes

After you redeem a code, the order dialog shows a Discount code row with what the code does, for example "Permanent discount of ..." or "Discount of ... for the first ... months", and the code itself.

  • A code that applies to every payment lowers the Total price right away. The regular price is shown crossed out next to it, and a line reads "You pay ... instead of ..." with both amounts.
  • A code for the first payment or the first months leaves the regular price in the Total price and adds a line "First payment ... instead of ...".

A code takes off a percentage or a fixed amount. Where VAT applies, the dialog's amounts include it.

When you click Order with obligation to pay, memberarea checks the code once more. If it no longer fits, for example because it expired in the meantime, nothing is ordered and the reason appears on the Billing page.

Which plans a code works for

A code works for a new subscription, for a change of a running plan and for a lifetime plan. On a lifetime plan, the discount is applied on the Stripe payment page that opens after you order.

A code can be limited to certain plans or to a minimum order value. It can also be reserved for one account or for workspaces that have never paid memberarea before. Workspaces billed through Shopify, or whose plan is managed by the platform, cannot redeem a code.

When a code is rejected

The message below the field tells you why:

  • This discount code is not valid. The code does not exist, is no longer active or has expired.
  • This discount code does not apply to the selected plan. The code is limited to other plans, or to a different currency.
  • This discount code cannot be redeemed on your account. The code is reserved for another account, or it is only for a first purchase and your workspace has already paid an invoice.
  • This discount code only applies from a higher order value. The plan price is below the code's minimum.
  • A loyalty discount is already running on your account. A second code cannot be combined with it. See the next section.
  • The remaining credit of your current plan is already applied to this order. A discount code cannot be added on top. See the next section.

Codes and other discounts

An order carries one discount at a time.

  • Loyalty discount: if your workspace has a loyalty discount on a plan, the order dialog for that plan shows it in its own row and offers no code field. Lifetime plans are not covered by the loyalty discount, so a code works there.
  • Lifetime credit: when you buy a lifetime plan while your subscription is active, the time you already paid for is credited against the lifetime price. That credit is the discount on this order, so the code field is not offered.

A partner's discount code

A partner code works like any other code, with a few fixed rules:

  • It gives a percentage off for your first months, for example 20 percent for the first 3 months. The dialog shows the exact discount before you order.
  • It works on monthly and yearly plans, not on lifetime plans.
  • It is meant for a first purchase. Once your workspace has paid memberarea an invoice, the code is rejected as not redeemable on your account.
  • Ordering with it links your workspace to the partner who shared it, even if you never clicked their link, unless the code is your own. If your workspace is already linked to a partner, that link stays.
