Creating a Hub

Create a hub from a template or a blank canvas, set its title and look, decide who gets access and sort it into categories.

In this article

Creating a hub takes two short steps: pick a starting point, then give the hub a title and a look. After that you land in the editor and fill it with rows and elements. This article covers the first hub from start to access, so members can actually open it.

Open Hubs

Step 1: choose a starting point

Click Add. On an empty list you can also use New Hub in the middle of the page. The dialog Select hub template opens with a search field and a list of templates. The first entry is No template: "Start with a blank canvas and create your personal dashboard." Templates provided by memberarea carry the badge Template, next to them are the templates your team saved. Preview opens a template in full before you decide. Loading the templates needs the View Hub Templates permission. Without it the dialog shows Templates could not be loaded., but No template is still there.

Pick one and click Continue. A template copies its rows and elements into your new hub, including their texts in your current language. From then on the hub is independent: later changes to the template do not reach it.

Step 2: title and look

The dialog Create New Hub asks for:

  • Title. Required. Members see it as the name of the hub.
  • Icon, with an icon picker and a Color. The color starts with your workspace's primary color.
  • Thumbnail, a 16:9 image that represents the hub in lists.

Click Create. The hub is created as a draft and the editor opens right away. Members see nothing yet: a hub only reaches them once you publish it and give them access.

Note

Your plan sets how many hubs a workspace can have. When you reach the limit, Create shows an upgrade dialog instead of creating the hub. Deleted hubs in the trash do not count, but restoring one does.

Change the title or look later

In the editor, the three-dot menu in the header holds Settings. It opens Hub settings with the same fields: Title, Icon, Color and Thumbnail. You can also click the title in the header and type a new one; it saves when you leave the field.

These changes go into the draft. Members see the new title or icon after your next publish.

Give members access

A published hub is still invisible to members until you assign them. Open Manage Access from the three-dot menu in the hub list or in the editor.

  • Members lists the people who have access. The assign button opens Add Member, where you search and add people. The column Access through shows whether someone has access directly or through a group.
  • Groups assigns whole groups. The assign button opens Add Group. Every member of the group gets access, and people who join the group later get it too.

If everyone in your workspace should see the hub, select it in the list and choose Access > Make available to all. That assigns the built-in All members group, which always contains all your members. Restrict access removes that group again.

When Payments is switched on under Settings > Features, Manage Access also shows Products and Bundles, so a purchase can unlock the hub. See What a purchase unlocks.

Changing access needs the Assign Member or Group to Hub permission. Adding or removing members and groups under Manage Access is recorded in the audit log. Groups themselves are explained in Creating and assigning groups.

Sort hubs into categories

Categories keep a long hub list manageable for your team. Members never see them.

Click the Categories button in the toolbar to show the category bar above the list. It starts with All hubs. Once you have categories, No category at the end shows the hubs that have none. The gear button opens Manage Categories, where Add category creates one. Each category has a Name, an Icon and a Color; without a choice, a new category gets a folder icon in grey.

To fill a category, open its menu in the bar and choose Assign Hubs, or select hubs in the list and pick a category under Category in the bulk bar. A hub can sit in several categories at once. Remove from categories in the bulk bar clears them from the selected hubs.

Deleting a category keeps your hubs: "Your hubs are kept, they just lose this category."

Duplicate a hub

Duplicate in the three-dot menu opens Duplicate Hub with the field Name of duplicated Hub, prefilled with the old name and "(Copy)". The copy takes over the current draft with all rows and elements, plus the categories. It does not take over members or groups, and it starts unpublished. The editor of the copy opens right after. Duplicating counts toward your plan's hub limit like a new hub.

Next step

Fill the hub with content: Hub rows and elements.
