The trash: restoring deleted content

Find deleted courses, hubs, events and more in the trash, restore them, or delete them for good before the 90 days run out.

In this article

When you delete a course, a hub, an event or one of several other items, it is not gone right away. It moves to the trash, where you can bring it back if you deleted it by mistake, or remove it for good once you are sure.

Open the trash

The trash lives under Settings > Trash.

What lands in the trash

The tabs at the top sort deleted items by area, each with a count:

  • Community: Areas and Forums
  • Courses: Courses, Modules, Sections and Lessons
  • Hubs
  • Events: Calendars and Events
  • Payments: Products, Coupons, Categories and Subscription Groups
  • Automations

The tabs for Community, Events and Payments only fill up once you use these features. If one of them is off in your workspace, turn it on under Settings > Features.

Members and single community posts never appear here. Pages and elements you delete inside a lesson are not here either: the lesson editor keeps its own trash for them, for 30 days.

When you delete a course, the Delete this course? dialog lets you delete the modules that belong only to this course along with it, under Its own modules. Those modules land in the trash as separate items under Modules. Restoring the course does not bring them back, so restore them as well.

The overview

Overview opens first. Four tiles count what is waiting:

  • In the trash: everything, across all tabs.
  • Expiring this week: items with 7 days or fewer left.
  • Expiring this month: items with 8 to 30 days left.
  • Safe for now: items with more than 30 days left.

Below, Expiring soon lists every item with 7 days or fewer left, so the urgent ones are in one place. The small label on each row names the item type; click it to jump to that item's tab. When nothing is due, the box reads "Nothing expires in the next 7 days."

How long items stay

Each row shows Deleted at with the date and how many days are left. The page counts 90 days from the moment you deleted the item. In each tab, the items are grouped into Expiring this week, Expiring this month and Expiring later, with the fewest days left on top.

Treat that number as your deadline. Community areas and forums are removed for good by a daily cleanup once their 90 days are over, together with all their posts, comments and attached files.

Restoring an item

Click Restore in the item's row. The item reappears in its usual list and leaves the trash.

Deleting a community area also moves its forums to the trash, so they show up under Forums as well. Restoring the area brings back the forums that were deleted together with it. A forum you deleted on its own earlier stays in the trash until you restore it separately.

Courses, hubs, forums and events count against the limits of your plan. One of these is only restored while your plan has room for another. If you are at the limit, the item is not restored and is still in the trash when you reload the page. Free up a slot or upgrade, then try again.

Deleting an item for good

Click the trash icon next to Restore, labeled Delete permanently. The row asks Delete permanently? and offers Delete and Cancel. After Delete, the item is removed for good.

Warning

Deleting for good cannot be undone. For a forum, this also deletes every post and comment in it, their likes and votes, and the files attached to them unless another post still uses the same file. For an area, it deletes every forum inside the area in the same way.

Who can use the trash

Like every settings page, the trash needs the Update Platform Settings permission, which the role editor lists as Update Platform. Listing, restoring and deleting items also needs Manage Trash. The built-in Owner and Admin roles have both. In the role editor, both sit in the Settings group, and you can add Manage Trash to a custom role there.
