Progress answers two questions: how far has each member come, and where does a course lose people? You read the answers in three places. The Statistics tab of a course shows the overall picture, the member list on its Access tab shows each person, and Lesson statistics zooms into a single lesson. Work that members hand in collects under Submissions.
The Statistics, Access and Submissions tabs sit in the course editor, which needs the Edit Course permission.
What counts as progress
A lesson is complete once the member has completed every page and done what the lesson asks for. Elements switched to Must be done have to be finished, and a submission switched to Must be rated only counts after you have graded it. Until then, a lesson whose pages are all done stays at 99 percent.
Only the published version counts. Pages, required elements and submissions that you have not published with Update Course yet do not hold a lesson back, and neither do hidden pages. Progress, submissions and quiz answers only count in modules and lessons that are open for the member. A lesson keeps the date it was first completed.
Course progress weighs each lesson by the duration of its pages, so a long lesson moves the bar further than a short one, and a lesson that is half done counts half. You set the duration of each page in the lesson editor, see Working in the lesson editor. Every exam with at least one question weighs like a ten-minute lesson and counts as done once the member has passed it. A lesson whose pages have no duration does not move the bar; it only matters for reaching 100 percent. If no lesson has a duration and the course has no exam, every lesson counts the same. A course shows 100 percent only when every lesson is complete and every exam is passed.
The course figures are based on the published version of the course. Lessons you have not published yet do not count. Hidden modules are left out, and so are modules hidden for a single member under Unlock content.
The Statistics tab
Four figures sit at the top:
- Enrolled members counts everyone with access, directly or through a group.
- Active learners counts the enrolled members who have started at least one lesson, with their share of all enrolled members.
- Completed course counts the members at 100 percent, with every lesson complete and every exam passed, with the completion rate underneath.
- Average completion shows the average course progress of enrolled members, exams included, together with the average learning time.
The Lesson completion funnel lists the lessons in course order and how many enrolled members completed each one. A red number shows how many fewer members completed a lesson than the one before it, which is where to look when people stop. Completions over time charts completed lessons per day, and Completion by module shows, for each module, how much of its lessons enrolled members have completed on average.
As long as nobody has access, the tab reads No statistics yet.

Following one member
The Members list on the Access tab shows Person name, Progress, Learning time, Last Online, Last lesson and Certificate for each person. Learning time adds up the time spent on lesson pages. The list shows everyone with access, directly or through a group. Remove from course only appears for direct access. Access through a group is managed under Groups, next to Members.
Choose User statistics on a row to open the details. Course progress lists every module with its lessons, which pages are done, the completion date and the time spent.
Unlock content overrides the course rules for this one member, module by module:
- Default (course rules) applies the course's normal access rules.
- Visible opens the module even while the rules would still keep it locked.
- Hidden hides the module from this member and leaves it out of their progress.
Loading the list and User statistics needs View Course. Changing Unlock content and Remove from course need the Assign Member or Group to Course permission.

Statistics for a single lesson
In the lesson editor, open the toolbar menu and choose Lesson statistics. Members reached, Completion rate, Completed and Average time summarize the lesson. Page statistics shows for each page its completion rate, how many members opened it and the median time spent, plus Drop off: the members who opened the previous page but not this one. Answer distribution shows, for every Multiple Choice and Multiple Select element, how many members answered, what share got it right and how often each answer was picked.
Lesson statistics need Edit Course or Edit Module, the same as the lesson editor.
A lesson counts every member who worked through it, in every course that uses its module. The course statistics only count members of that course.
Grading submissions
Work that members hand in collects under Courses > Submissions and on the Submissions tab of each course. A submission switched to Must be rated only counts toward progress once you have graded it, and one sent back for revision no longer counts until the member hands in new work.
