The home screen app (PWA)

Choose the name, icon and theme color members see when they add your platform to their home screen, and decide whether to show the install banner.

In this article

Members can add your platform to their home screen, like an app. It then opens from its own icon, in its own window without the browser's address bar. On this page you decide how that app looks and whether members are invited to install it.

Open the home screen settings

The page has two boxes on the left, Icon and name and Install banner, and a Preview on the right. The preview shows a phone with your icon, the name under it and the theme color in the status bar, and it updates as you type. Changes take effect once you click Save in the bar that appears at the bottom as soon as you change something.

The app name

App name is the label under the icon on the home screen. It can be up to 30 characters long. Leave it empty to use the Platform Name from your general settings, which the field shows as its placeholder.

The app also gets a short name made of the first 12 characters of the name, which is why the hint below the field asks you to keep it short.

The app icon

Click Choose icon under App icon to pick an image from your media library. The hint asks for a square PNG, best 512 x 512 px. The same image is used for every icon size the app declares, 192 and 512 pixels, so a large square image works best.

If you do not pick an icon, the app uses your favicon instead, first the light version and then the dark one. Without a favicon, it uses your logo, in the same order. Without any of these, the preview shows the first letter of the name, but the installed app gets a generic platform icon, so pick an icon to be sure. Apple devices read the home screen icon from a separate link, which follows the same order.

The theme color

Theme color colors the status bar and the title bar while the app is open. It starts as a dark gray, #111827. Pick a color that matches your brand. Only six-digit hex values are accepted.

The background color of the app is not set here. It is taken from the Background color under Light Mode in your design settings.

As soon as the name, icon or color differ from the defaults, Icon and name shows a Reset button. It empties the name and the icon and sets the color back to the default. The install banner is not touched. Save afterwards to apply it.

The install banner

Show install banner is on in every new workspace. Members then see a small banner at the bottom of the page, titled Install app, with the text "Add to your home screen for quick access." and an Install button. The banner uses the language the page is shown in.

The banner only shows up when the browser itself reports that the platform can be installed. Browsers without that signal never show it. Tapping Install opens the browser's own install dialog. Closing the banner hides it for the rest of the session in that tab, and once the app is installed, it disappears.

Turning the switch off only removes the banner. Your platform stays installable, with the same name, icon and colors.

What the app opens

The installed app always starts on the home page of the address it was installed from, in portrait orientation. It loads your platform live, the same as the browser does.

The app does not keep your content for offline use. Without a connection, members see a page saying "You're offline" with a "Try again" button.

Who can change these settings

Opening the page needs the Update Platform Settings permission, which the role editor lists as Update Platform. Saving changes also needs Manage Platform Design. The built-in Owner and Admin roles have both. Every save leaves an entry in the Audit Log.
