Button growth tool

Place a sign-up button on any page you control: it opens a window with an optional form and the choice of a calendar app.

In this article

The button is the smallest Growth Tool. It takes up no more room than a single button on your page. When visitors click it, a window opens with your headline, an optional form and the choice of their calendar app. Use it where a box or a banner would be too much, for example next to an event description or in a navigation bar.

Open Growth Tools

Creating one

Click New Growth Tool and choose Button. The editor has four tabs: Setup, Form, Appearance and Share. The preview shows the button on a sample page.

Setup

The Setup tab works as for every Growth Tool. Under Method, choose Subscribe to Calendar and add calendars with Add Calendar, or choose Add event and add events with Add Event. The tool needs at least one calendar or event before it can be saved.

When you switch the method, a button text that still reads "Subscribe" changes to "Add Event", and back again. A text you wrote yourself stays as it is.

The landing page article explains the setup in detail.

Form

Collect Contact Information is switched off for a new button, so the window goes straight to the calendar apps. Switch it on to ask for a name, an email address or other answers first. The form starts with "Full Name" and "Email address", and Add Field adds more.

The questions work exactly as on a landing page: each one has a Question, a Reply Type, and, for anything other than name and email, a member field under Save response to Custom Field. Required questions must be answered before visitors can continue, and an email answer must look like an email address.

Appearance

Appearance is split into states, and the preview follows the one you pick.

Initial State is the button itself: Button Colors for background and text, Button Size and Button Text.

Form State appears only while Collect Contact Information is on. It styles the window that opens:

  • Show Description. The headline and the description are edited by clicking into them in the preview.
  • Layout Colors for the window, the headline and the description, and Form Input Colors for the fields.
  • Calendar Selector: show the calendar apps as tiles with name and icon (Button), or as a row of Icons.
  • The colors, position and text of the button that sends the form.

Submitted State is the window after visitors have picked their calendar app. Set the colors, the position and the text of its button there.

Share: placing the button

The Share tab offers two codes. For a button, use the second one under Or embed as an inline widget. As the hint says, it renders the button directly in the page, without an iframe:

<div class="cdwidget-embed" data-widget-id="…"></div>
<script src="https://…/assets/js/growth-tools.js" async></script>

Copy the code from the tab, not from this article, because it carries the address and the code of your tool. Paste both lines where the button should appear, for example in an HTML block of your page editor.

If you place several Growth Tools on one page, paste both lines for each of them.

Important

The button only appears while the tool is active. A new button starts inactive, so switch it on with the status switch in the editor header once it is ready.

The embedded button picks up the current settings each time the page loads. After you change colors or texts and click Save, there is no need to copy the code again.

What visitors see

A click on the button opens the window. If you collect contact information, visitors answer the questions first and then continue to the calendar apps. They choose their calendar app, and the window switches to its submitted state, headed "Add to Calendar", with a button that opens the app in a new tab. With Add event, Google, Office 365, Outlook.com and Yahoo open with the event already filled in.

Sign-ups through the button count as Opt-Ins in the Growth Tools list.
